Signs

If planets are the actors and performers in the realm of astrology, the the signs define the field for them. Planets and signs are interrelated and affect each other in the most intricate way possible. Planets define the signs through their lordship and signs modify the way planets work and go about doing their job.

When we have a horoscope at hand, interpretation and predictions are done through both planets and signs. The sign rising in the east at the time of birth is lagna and forms the basis of the horoscope. The other is the position of Moon in the horoscope  that defines the Janma Rashi. Lagna by itself symbolizes the fundamental nature and the very basic and raw thought process of the individual. Janma Rashi is important as it forms the emotional foundation for the horoscope. Fixing the lagna also fixes the rest of the signs of the horoscope and hence governs the interpretation of the rest of the horoscope. Once a budding astrologer has understood this concept and is able to understand the position of other planets from both Lagna and Rashi, Astrology becomes a breeze.

Taken an example – for Aries lagna persons, Mars governs the first house and Aries is the sign in the first house. Hence this person’s basic nature would be warm, hot-headed and with a tinge of selfishness. This is because Aries sign that portrays these qualities governs the first house. For the same person, Venus denotes the 2nd (Taurus) and 7th (Libra) house of family and domestic environment. If this is a case in a man’s horoscope, he would like his family, home and domestic environment to be surrounded by luxury and comforts. His wife would be a classy lady with lot of grace, unless of course Venus is badly afflicted. In another example, for a Libra lagna person, Sun, through its lordship of Leo denotes house 11 as Leo sign falls in house 11. Hence such a person is likely to earn money through government and also be able to benefit from favours of higher ups in authority.

The list of all the signs and their qualities are presented below in this table. Each sign is one of Fire, Earth, Air and Water sign. They also are of movable, fixed and common mobility. This classification and delineations are important for interpretation. E.g., there is a difference between Aries and Scorpio both ruled by Mars. Sun is exalted in Aries, because it is fiery sign and it is muted in Scorpio which is a watery sign. I would encourage astrologers to open pages for such dual lordship side by side and compare. It will be a good learning experiences.

Details of individuals signs are presented in their respective individual pages.
