Vedic Astrology Yogas

Adoption (Dattak-putra yogas)

By Kshitij Sharma, February 9, 2009

The combinations for predicting adoption of a child by a couple are based on looking at the weakness of putrakaraka elements in the chart. The logic is simple – if there are no natural issues, adoption is the next possibility. The yogas therefore are more or less along the lines of malefic aspect on 5th (and 9th) lords/houses (thus denying children) and also on the 7th house (denying ability to procreate).

  1. Effect of Saturn and Mars on 5th house either by occupation or aspect afflicts the house of children.
  2. Lord of 5th house in barren signs, i.e. those signs belonging to Saturn and Mercury.
  3. Barren signs, i.e., Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius in 5th house in a horoscope. This means that people with lagnas – Aquarius, Taurus, Virgo, Libra are more likely to adopt than others.
  4. Affliction of 7th house indicates inability to procreate.
  5. Association of lord of lagna with Mercury may also indicate inability to procreate.
  6. Since a person will have a child to call his own after adoption, influence of a benefic on the 5th house or its lord is a must.

Expenses and Spending Money – 12th and 2nd house

By Kshitij Sharma, July 20, 2008

According to Vedic Astrology, in a horoscope, 12th house indicates:

  • Expenses,
  • Foreign elements, places and journeys to foreign location and
  • Final liberation (moksha)

As far as expenses are concerned, this house is better left alone. Presence or influence of any planet in this house increases the tendency to spend money and the reason or the cause of expenditure depends on the disposition on the planet. Continue reading

General Strength of a Bhava

By Kshitij Sharma, June 17, 2008

In a horoscope, to assess the results of a house with respect to areas it signifies, we need to look at influence of other planets on these three elements –

  1. The house,
  2. Influence on the lord of the house, and
  3. Influence on the Karaka of the house.

Beneficial influence on these elements contributes to their strength. If all three elements are strong, Continue reading

Rules of Combination of Planets

By Kshitij Sharma, March 16, 2008

This post, although being posted late, should be read before any other posts under References category. In a Vedic horoscope, planets are said to be in combination if:

  1. Kshetra Sambandha (क्षेत्र सम्बंध): They exchange location and occupy each other’s rashi. E.g. Venus in Leo and Sun in Taurus simultaneously in the chart
  2. Drishti Sambandha (दृष्टि सम्बंध): They affect each other through full aspect or drishti,
  3. Rashish Drishti Sambandha (राशीश दृष्टि सम्बंध): Continue reading

Foreign Travel and Journeys

By Kshitij Sharma, February 11, 2008

My primary motivation behind writing this article is to reason out and derive the principles for predicting foreign travel by way of Vedic Astrology and try to fit the description for the cases that I know of. Over the years, I have rummaged through various books and magazines, but have not been entirely satisfied with the content. My analysis may not be entirely correct and I am even ready for nasty comments for the content of this article 🙂 Please help me in this exercise of my own learning. I will be more than happy to look at your comments and incorporate appropriate changes in the main article for benefit of all.

Traveling to new places, meeting new people either for purpose of business or just for pleasure helps gains knowledge and broaden our horizons and perspective. It makes us wiser.

Mercury and creativity

By Kshitij Sharma, January 28, 2008

Apologies for not being able to write any new posts for a long time. A combination of personal and professional issues did not allow me to work on the site other than performing routine maintenance. I have been going through all the comments though and this one caught my attention where the person is concerned if Mercury would affect married life in a negative way.

This is a fairly generic statement and should be understood as such. The simple answer is unless Mercury is itself afflicted (because is it most mutable planet and assumes nature of planets associated with it) and is afflicting 7th house as a cruel, malefic planet, there should not be any problems with respect to marriage.

I have also read in one of the astrology books that Mercury has absolutely no effect whatsoever, either positive or negative, on capacity to have children. Mercury governs creativity of thought. What gets created with this ability is books, literature and other forms of communication that can transcend time and affect people for generations to come. Hence this planet should not be seen in a bad light.

Please let me know if this argument makes sense.

To Ishan I would like to say that strengthening mercury would help definitely help you in your problems. Please have faith. The results may not be visible immediately but situation will improve in a longer run.

Predictions using Vimshottari Dasha

By Kshitij Sharma, December 2, 2007

Prediction about any event in an astrology chart is done by looking at either transits of planets (gochara) or by referring to a dasha period. Dasha period system is the more important of prediction systems in use. There are various dasha periods used within Indian Astrology – Vimshottari, Sodashottari, Dwadashattari, Ashtottari etc. Within these dasha systems also, Vimshottari dasha system is marked as the most important one in the ancient texts. The birth chart application in this site displays the Vimshottari dasha.

Vimshottari means 120. The dasha is called as such because of the period of effect of various planets adds up to 120. Dasha periods are always calculated according to the position of Moon in the chart. Janma Nakshatra therefore plays an important part in calculating the starting dasha period in the chart, which is determined by the lord of the nakshatra that the Moon falls in at the time of birth. Good results by Rahu and Ketu

By Kshitij Sharma, August 2, 2007

Rahu and Ketu are considered shadow planets (chhaya graha). They are mathematical entities whose manifestation is physically evident only during solar and lunar eclipses.

References to Rahu and Ketu can be found in a lot of Hindu scriptures including Rigveda, Atharva-veda and Mahabharata. Per Vishnu Purana, Rahu was a demon (asura, rakshasa) who tasted amrit, the divine nectar of immortality, by deceit, which was being served only to Gods by Vishnu, under the guise of Mohini. Even though Vishnu tried to kill him, he did not die because by then he had already consumed amrit. The upper and lower body parts of that demon were named as Rahu and Ketu. Continue reading

Maraka Planets

By Kshitij Sharma, May 18, 2007

Maraka planets are ones that get qualities of causing death by virtue of ownership of certain houses in the Vedic horoscope.

In Brihad Parashara Hora Shashtra, Maharshi Parashar has commented that 3rd and 8th house in a horoscope are houses that denote length of life. The vyayasthanas (12th) from these houses are bestowed with the quality of expending away life. Overall longivity should still be seen from 3rd and 8th, but the cause and timing of death should seen from rulers of 2nd and 7th houses. Inimical planets in these houses should also be seen in the same light.

Why suddenly a discussion on Maraka planets? While recognizing and understanding that death is the finality, I am hail and hearty, thanks for asking. 🙂

We always associate life and death with an organism, very interestingly this works for various aspects denoted by the horoscope as well. During the recession years of 2001-2003 in the US, my company went under and I too lost my job like lakhs of other engineers. I was running mahadasha/antardasha of rulers of 4th and 11th house – 7th and 2nd from 10th, the house that denotes profession and career.
