The Astrological Magazine

By Kshitij Sharma, February 29, 2008

My subscription cheque for “The Astrological Magazine” has been returned with a note from them:

We regret to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, the publication of The Astrological Magazine will stop with the December 2007 issue. All unexpired subscription amounts will be refunded shortly. We thank all our subscribers for their kind co-operation in this matter.

Cynics may find satire and irony in this statement, but its very sad indeed for the followers of this magazine.

Wow. That is a big blow. I received news of this in January, when my father was unable to purchase the Annual Number. It is very sad that a great publication promoting not just Hindu Astrology, but also Hindu Culture, has ended so abruptly.

Really sad indeed that the AM has abruptly stopped publication. The editorship changed hands in mid-2007 and with that the great editorials also had stopped. I believe the new editor was more into Vaastu. What is ironic in the statement they issued is the choice of the word “unforseen”. Maybe they should have used the word “unavoidable” instead.

There is another Chennai based magazine, “Express Star Teller” that I now buy regularly.

Many years back, there was a journal called “Times of Astrology” edited by R. Santanam who has translated many classics such as Saravali etc. It stopped after the editor passed away.

I believe there is also “The journal of Astrology” which is quarterly and has half the magazine in English and the other half in Hindi. It is edited by the Delhi based astrologer KN Rao. I had bought an issue in mid 2006 in a shop in Bangalore but I don’t see this journal in the stalls these days. Probably it is available only on subscription.

It would be nice to know if there are other magazines on Astrology in publication in India.

    Well! Nothing is forever.

Even the Astrological Magazine has to meet its fate, probably through adverse planetary dispositions.

  • Comment by Thamizh on April 30, 2008 at 10:51 am

It is extremely unfortunate that even the contributors to the magazine couldnt predict that it will have to stop its publication. No regrets though, it is all written in stars. Nothing we can do about it 🙁

I am a fond reader of B V Raman, I almost read at least once most of his books. I know that he sacrificed his life for ” THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE”.

I had felt a deep love on AM because of Mr., Raman’s narration( about his difficulties in bringing every issue of AM)

I am sorry to say the childrens are not interested as much as Mr Raman in bringing the issue out.

I have a Suggestion, they can atleast bring the AM issue with his previous writings with just panchang alone, or even they can bring a half yearly issue or annual.

I am deeply hurt knowing this. AM is the face of INDIAN Astro Intellectual to the outside world.

    what more to say…..

For almost 36 years, I have been a regular reader of AM. I am not ashamed to write here that for a number of years, I used to buy the old copies on Anna Road (Mount Road), Chennai. Later when I got positioned economcially, I became a subscriber to the magazine. I was very much shocked when I received the communication from the publishers on the stoppage of AM and refund. I even thought of telling them not to refund the money. Although these are very personal matters amongst the managing people, I humbly believe that the extreme could have been avoided at all costs. I only pray the Almighty that good counselling should prevail.

Its indeed very sad. Is there anything that can be done to revive it? We can atleast preserve the past copies by making a soft copies and distributing it to the interested readers. Is it anyway we can contact the present editors?
I have always read all the writings by Prof BV Raman with great interests. Most interestingly his style of writing was candid and highly intellectual.

On each visit to India I used to buy the Astrological Magazine. Very disappointing news to see it shut down. I was quite shocked about it, considering that it was B.V. Raman’s dream and lifework. Some more efforts should have been made to keep it going. India is a huge country. Surely there has been many people who bought the magazine, and kept it in business. Money cannot have been the main issue, or?

  • Comment by Akshay Sharma on August 27, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Better counsel ought to prevail amongst the heirs of Mr.B.V.Raman, with a proper appreciation of different views. The magazine was a source of inspiration and revelation to several readers like me and its discontinuance is a big blow for astrology and also the memory of Mr.B.V. Raman. Should not his ideals be preserved and maintained?

It is a sad state of affairs that a healthy and positive forum like The AM has to close down due to “unforeseen circumstances”. This should be rectified immediately and even if puhlishing is not possible at least an e version of the same ought to be released.

The current scenario is a very confusing one and requires the elucidation of various experts with appropriate inclusion of all fields of astrology. If the board of management is reading this please find my most heart broken request to continue with the publication and if the different sections are not in a position to make up, then at least two or more versions of AM ought to be realeased incoporation the differing views of the different members.

DOnt do a disservice to astrology and Mr.B.V.Raman by continiuing this impasse. Please read this as a reflection of the requirements of entire India as inforamtion in the Age of the Aquarian phase ought to be spread far and wide.

I invite one and all to request this to happen immediately.

It was indeed sad that a world renowned magazine had come to an end.
Our family is associated with Astrological Magazine since 1950’s. Myself hailing from the geniality of astrologers for the past about 4-5 generations, my father late Shri VAK Ayer, who was renowned in astrology, who was author, journalist, for more than half a century, author of a few books in astrology was multi-columnist in the magazine since 1968 till January 1991. Among his conteporaries were M/s Keshava Menon, H R Shankar, Lakshmanan, C S Patel (to name a few).

Each issue of the magazine had at least one research-oriented article, which were worth preserving.

Contributors of yester years in this magazine are still being respected, since they lived for this divine science.

The world is eagerly waiting for the reappearance of The Astrological Magazine.

It is sad that a platform of astrology culture of our country has suddenly disappeared. I am not bothered about the subscription refund but am genuinely puzzled that the erudite heirs of Surya Narayan Rao and B.V.Raman could not garner support to keep this institution (AM) alive ? The death of AM is a national issue (at least in my perception) and that it made no waves reflects the total disregard Indian society (dominant English speaking section) has for both traditional knowledge and the untiring efforts made by people/institutions to unearth and refurbish the degraded form of such knowledge.

It was very painfull to receieve note informing closure of The Astrological Magazine with founding editor honourable Dr. B. V. Raman. After his demise, his worty children could not carry the light of astrology and unforfunately decided to close the ublication. It is a great loss to ardant lovers of the astroly. May God Saraswati bestow the family GYAN to rekindle the light of Astrology. My appeal to all well wishers of Astrology to pray for the rebirth of the magazine

“Unforseen circumstances beyond our control” can be eliminated, if not controlled, by rational thinking, mutual trust and respect. Astrological knowledge (Magzine) is not to be “controlled” by denying the benefits of its profound knowledge to the public at large. I pray to the Lord, the Magazine will re-incarnate once again! Millions of readers are being deprived of the astrological benefits in their personal life.

Your website is divine beautiful, informative and Excellent.

Indian Vedic contribution is a reservoir of Vibrant Information and Harmonious Creativity. May the Womb of Nature Embrace all with Tranquil Blessings from this day forward. Let this attract one’s attention affecting them Positively. It is a Sanctuary of the Self , a Creative Venue which serves as an Enduring Expression of Lightness, where a peaceful Atmosphere with Sunlight Flows and serene atmosphere prevail.
In the storm of life we struggle through myriads of stimuli of pressure, stress, and muti-problems that seek for a solution and answer. We are so suppressed by the routine of this every life style that most of us seem helpless. However, if we look closely to ancient techniques we shall discover the magnificent way to understand and realize the ones around us and mostly ourselves. If only we could stop for a moment and allow this to happen. May all beings be happy (Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu)
The ancient Hindu philosophy of keepiing mind and body for the well being, has entered the managerial, medical and judicial domain of the world. Today it has found its place as an alternative to the theory of modern management and also as a means to bring back the right path of peace and prosperity for the human beings. Let me bow to Indian Maharishi Veda Vysa with folded hands who helped in removing the impurities of the mind through his writings on Vedas, impurities of speech through his writings on puranas, and impurities of body through his writings on other sacred texts.LORD

It is very disappointing thing which can be digested so easily, but there is one beautiful saying “Each and everything whether it is good or bad whether you like or not should come to an end.” In the similar way it has come to an end.
