General Strength of a Bhava

By Kshitij Sharma, June 17, 2008

In a horoscope, to assess the results of a house with respect to areas it signifies, we need to look at influence of other planets on these three elements –

  1. The house,
  2. Influence on the lord of the house, and
  3. Influence on the Karaka of the house.

Beneficial influence on these elements contributes to their strength. If all three elements are strong, then 100% results for the house can be obtained. Correspondingly, malefic influences reduce the strength of the house and are harmful for the results being signified by the house.

The karaka of the house is not the karaka for all purposes. The trait of the house is important here, e.g. Sun is a karak for father and for recognition from king. In a horoscope, father is looked at from 9th house and recognition from state is looked at from 10th house. This means that when we look at these traits, we would look at Sun in both cases. Similarly, vehicles and houses are judged from fourth bhava. But for vehicles we look at Venus and for houses we need to look at Mars. Mars and Venus are grihakaraka and vahanakaraka respectively.

The influence on the matter at hand or the area that is signified, as denoted by the bhava is judged at the following (in order of importance):

  1. Lord of the house – this planet is the “owner” of the trait in the horoscope for all practical purposes, e.g. lord of 10th house is the main influencer of the vocation or occupation.
  2. Karaka for the trait – e.g., Sun is natural Karaka for father. This planet is just as important as the lord, but definitely one step lower in importance
  3. Planets located/situated in the house – these planets exert their influence in a big way
  4. What are the planets having specific combination of planets with the lord or karaka? See this post on rules of combinations of planets
  5. Which other planets have aspect or drishti on the house and on the lord

Strength of a house in a horoscope

An influence on the house should be seen from drishti or occupation of the house by other planets. Beneficial influence comes from occupation or full aspect of planets like Jupiter, Venus, Moon and planets in exaltation. Malefic influence comes from (generally speaking) Saturn, Mars, Rahu/Ketu and (specifically) lords of 6th, 8th and 12th houses. A house in a horoscope is considered weak if its lord is located 6th, 8th or 12th from the house. If Maraka planets are co-located in a house, it is considered to harmful to the aspect of the house during their transits and dasha period.

Strength of lord or Karaka

To look at the strength of lord or the karaka of the house, general rules for planetary strength in a horoscope are applicable, i.e. a planet is considered strong if:

  1. it is in exaltation,
  2. situated in its own rashi or in a rashi of a friendly planet,
  3. in kendra or trikona in a horoscope,
  4. is vargottama,
  5. close to the mid-point of a bhava,
  6. influenced by aspect from beneficial planets,
  7. influenced by beneficial planets by being situated in the same house in a horoscope.

Further, a planet in a horoscope is considered weak if:

  1. it is in debilitation,
  2. situated in a rashi of a planet inimical to it,
  3. situated in 6th, 8th or 12 house in a horoscope,
  4. by being located at bhava sandhi,
  5. influenced by aspect from malefic planets,
  6. influenced by malefic planets by being situated in the same house in a horoscope, or
  7. if it is combust by being close to the Sun – check this article to find out the degree nearness that planets should have with Sun

According to Uttar Kalamrita, if the lord of a house in a horoscope is governed by any of the above rules of debilitation, even the aspect of beneficial planets cannot rescue it. There are, however, exceptions to these rule. Location of Jupiter in 8th house cannot be considered bad as by being situated there, it can influence 2nd and 4th house through its 7th and 9th full drishti. Venus is considered a yogakaraka if it is situated in 6th or 12th house.

If the lords of 6th, 8th or 12th house are located in one of these inimical houses, it is considered to be auspicious and gives rise to viprit rajyoga.

“Venus is considered a yogakaraka if it is situated in 6th or 12th house.

Can you elaborate on this please. As in why is venus a yogakarka in the 6th and 12th houses. Where is it return?

I am not sure why Venus is considered a yogakarak in the 6th house but I think the reason it is considered a yogakarak in the 12th house is because it is exalted in Pisces which is the 12th sign of the Kalpurush zodiac. Logically Venus in the 6th house should not give good results because it gets debiliated in Virgo, which is the 6th sign of the Kalpurush Zodiac.

    Dear Mr. Srinivas

There is no astrological basis for rejecting a girl’s chart simply because it belongs to Moolam, or Ayilyam (Ashlesha in Sanskrit) or Kettai (Jyestha in Sanskrit). However, certain padas of these are deemed unsuitable. More than simply nakshatra matching, please give more importance to dasa vida poruttham (literally: 10 types of matching) giving emphasis to Rajju, and also to the absence of dasa sandhi (the natives should not encounter a change in mahadasha within 6 months to a year of each other, especially in the earlier years of marriage).

In the charts you have given, ensure that your family astrologer pays great attention to the 5th house to ensure a healthy vamsavali. In passing, please note that lagnas are in shashta-ashtaka.

    Hi Rajiv Varma,

I saw your chart… your ascendant is virgo like me.
I think in close rlationships we have same problems… Because our 7th lord is bad effected from saturn and jupiter. I wanna meet you and talk about your past life.

Thank you for taking the time to set this up. I am an American, born on the East coast. Your applet continually gives me a Pisces rising even though other online chart programs return an Aries rising for me. I think the problem may lie with the time zone data that you are using. It is not possible that I who was born at the end of June, at around 1 am, could be a Pisces rising.

    Friends

I have venus in the 12th house in saggitarius and also in the same place in navamsa. It is also aspected by Jupiter from Aries(also Saturn there). How good is it someone should tell me. I have not experienced any great fortune even during Venus dasa. I am an ordinary middle class person, now a senior citizen; relationship with wife has not been good at all since 1998 during Sun dasa and continues so even in Mars dasa which is in scorpio, 11th house. Any response….will I be monetarily more comfortable.

    Regards

Venus in Sixth gives good financial benefits if he is yoga karaka and has other dhana yogas in chart, but a mean character .specially for female natives, here venus is good.It is good in twelfth .

  • Comment by viswanathan on March 19, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Venus in the sixth house is good for financial prosperity and also aspecting the hedonistic 12th house reduces losses and expenses. It is said that benefics in the 6th house gives gentle behaviour to the native n so well liked even by competitors and enemies. Venus in the 6th builds wealth quickly so debts are detroyed but venus in the 6th makes the person suffer from diabetis .venus in the 6th aspecting 12th (foreign ) indicates forgrien trips are pleasant.
venus should the strong by sign placement.
