Profession and Downfalls - Part I (Rahu-Ketu Axis)

I have been practicing astrology for more than a decade now. Based on the interactions with my clients, I have come to a conclusion that a people are more concerned about their profession than other aspects of life. Most of my clients come to me questions like “When will I have stability in my job”, “Will I be transferred this year”, “What if I leave my job and take up a business” or “Am I into the right line of profession, if not what is best for me” etc. People take such failures very seriously and are less tolerant about them when it comes to career.
When I thought of writing an article about profession and vocation, I found myself confused on where to start. There are many books dedicated on this vast subject. I could not figure out how to express my views in a small article. I therefore decided to dedicate this article on the astrological combinations that cause downfall in profession, as it is the most worrisome area for a lot of us. I am trying to draw the attention of readers towards some of the planetary combinations which causes troubles and down falls to ones profession. These are based on my own experiences.
The Rahu-Ketu Axis and Unstable Career
The axis of Rahu and Ketu occurring in the fourth and tenth houses in a horoscope is one of the worst situations as far as profession is concerned. Irrespective of which planet (Rahu/Ketu) being posited in the tenth, the professional life of the native will suffer.
Rahu’s position in tenth house causes one to have frequent changes in his career. Such natives are much aggressive in their professional life. They seldom listen to others opinion and have strained relation with the co workers. They can be very impulsive which may lead them to making many a hasty decisions in career.
Rahu’s position in a fiery sign (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) in the tenth house: Rahu is an aggressor and when he gets posited in a fiery sign, his flares burn high. This will lead to native always getting in to adverse situations in the work place. He will have frequent arguments with his co workers and superiors. He will never care others word. He will quickly get bored with his work. He will work hard but most of his hard work would go unnoticed. Such natives may not change the line of profession frequently but change in the job is certain. Business men with this combination will seldom find success since they will never maintain good relation in their business circle. Their success in life will be only in patches.
Rahu position in a watery sign (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces): Rahu is less malefic than being located in a watery sign being posited in a fiery sign. The reason behind it is that Rahu will never attains much power in a watery sign like a fiery sign. But still Rahu will cause damage as much as possible because Rahu is uncomfortable in watery signs. In Pisces, Rahu is less harmful because Jupiter has a calming influence over Rahu as the depositor lord.
The natives with Rahu in the 10th house in a watery sign will have fewer changes in career but they tend to suffer more in their jobs. Such natives have a sense of frustration in their career and do not see many opportunities for change.
Rahu’s position in the tenth house in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn): Earth signs signify patience and practical approach. This influence on Rahu provides stability in career. Also, Rahu maintains a good relation with only a few planets and Venus and Mercury are among them. That’s the reason why Rahu is a less of a trouble in Taurus and Virgo. Such natives also may face some problems in their professional life and have the tendency to change jobs but will always hold their nerves with practical approach to the situation. Also they will have an attitude of seeing things from an angle of enjoyment and cooperation which will always help them stand strong even at the odd periods.
Rahu’s position in the tenth house in an airy sign (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius): In airy signs Rahu is most comfortable and causes least trouble. Once again two of the three airy signs Gemini and Libra are owned by Mercury and Venus who are friendly to Rahu. In Aquarius Rahu does not behave properly since the sign is owned by Saturn and the combination of Rahu-Saturn is always bad influence. Moreover most of the schools of astrology are of the opinion that for Rahu, Gemini and Virgo are like own houses. Taurus is considered Rahu’s exaltation sign. In practice, this has indeed been found to be true.
If Ketu is located in the tenth, then the native tends to suffer humiliation and hardship in their work life. The native will always find it difficult to enjoy their work because most likely he/she will be caught in a line of profession which is not the line of interest. But what makes Ketu’s case different is that such people will keep their frustrations and uneasiness unexpressed for long and then end it with a disastrous move. Unlike Rahu in the tenth, these people will not try to bring in a change in their career, but will ruin it by keep continuing at the same place and the performance going down each day, one day at a time. If Rahu forces one to have changes in the professional front even for no apparent reason, Ketu holds one from even reacting to adverse situations. And at last when they take a decision it will be pretty bad.
The transits of Rahu and Ketu are also adverse for career. Whenever the transit of either Rahu or Ketu has reference to the meridian point, there is tension in profession. A close examination however reveals that the transit of Ketu over the 10th house creates more trouble than than of Rahu. A transit of Rahu or Ketu over the natal 10th, either from Lagna or Moon, along with an influence of transit Saturn by the means of yoga or aspect, the situation gets worsened.

Thanks for the info Mr. Bijesh. You are very accurate in your assessment that if the rahu-ketu axis is in the 4th & 10th houses then instability in career is inevitable. My chart has the same position of the axis of rahu-ketu with rahu in the 4th and ketu in the 10th house. From the start of the shani mahadasha (from Jun’01) till now I changed my job 6 times and worse…I quit my job that may times without having a new job on hand. In the process I ended up with nearly 42 months i.e. 3.6 years being without a job. But during those short tenures of work I excelled in my performance. Majority of the times the reason was stress. I have 2 queries -
1. Does this mean that I should get into my own business?
2. Is there any remedy so that the impact of instability is reduced drastically?

You have raised two questions in your comment and for both I will be glad to answer but would like to have your birth details. Because for concluding whether a person will be doing better in service or business many factor from the horoscope has to be taken in to account. Also the line of remedy to be followed can only be suggested after analyzing the whole horoscope.

“In Aquarius Rahu does not behave properly since the sign is owned by Saturn and the combination of Rahu-Saturn is always bad influence. ” — I believe this claim is untenable as Parasara indicates that Rahu co-owns Aquarius, with Saturn.
Aquarius is the 10th house for Taurus lagna. Rahu and Saturn are friendly with Venus. Satabhishak is ruled by Rahu, and falls entirely in Aquarius. I feel Rahu in this house will be extremely favourable for material gains from the workplace. The planets in lagna and 5th determine the temperament, not the planets in the 10th.
The importance of understanding the disposition of the 9th and 10th lords in both navamsa and dasamsa cannot be over-emphasized in the matters of predicting professional advancement and regressions.

This article is really interesting one and Ananda ji’s comment on Rahu in Aq especially in Shatabisha also matches with discsussion I read it on web page.
Now in my chart, Rahu is in Aq & in Shatabhisha. It is 10H if I take Taurus as Lagna & 9H if I take Gemini is lagna. The reason I am taking both is my birth time is sandhi (Date 15/08/1970, Sangli @ 01:57 AM as per records and 2:16:30 as corrected by an learned astrologer).
I was deprived of higher education, but still did excellent in career in foreign land. But during Rah-Sun period, I faced sudden fall in my profession (i.e. 10H).
Also I had very bitter relation with my dad from Dec 1997 and up to Jan 2010 (i.e. 9H).
Would you please advise me how will be my professional life & financial prosperity in the coming days.
Note that since last 18 months there is no earning and I returned back to India on 31/03/2010 for permanent settlement leaving sizable savings with my clients. After returning to India, started a small business but success is still miles away. I am now thinking of returning back to foreign in search of work.
So your analysis and advise would really of great help.

As per your assessments about Ketu in 10th house mentioned in last 2 paras, the same conditions fits on me word by word as I am goining through exactly the same conditions since around 2005. But in my horoscope the position of Rahu and Ketu is 1st and 10th.Please put light on the same for more clarity.

DOB 09/11/1949 4:25 EDT Pittsburgh Penn USA Lagna 21 Sagittarius. I have this axis, with Ketu in 10th. Mercury is joined with Ketu….and does this destroy the exhaltataion of Mercury (as it takes on the power of Ketu)?…I have no career, which being in sales changes all the time. I have found no stability in life,but with constant change and insecurity great growth of awareness at the expense of personal life…it seems to be a curse for normal physical life, but blessing for higher awareness and spiritual detachment….so is this a exhaltation or a debilitation?

Thanks for your comment and a few words about all your views, some of which I agree, partially agree or disagree.

Rahu in Aquarius achieves power especially if he is posited in his own star and there is no doubt about it. Even he will provide some material gains too. But here we are discussing things from the professional point of view and for profession; Rahu in the 10th in Aquarius for Taurus Lagna is not at all supportive. I will drag your kind attention towards a few points to support my view.
Planets in Kendra, even if it is a malefic is considered good except Rahu and Ketu. Though most of the schools of astrology says that Rahu-Ketu are good in kendras and trikonas, in actual practice its been found that Rahu-Ketu are good only in 3, 6 and 11 houses. In rest of the places they always tend to cause damage for the karakatwas of the house they are posited or of the planets involved with them. The Satabhisha star totally falls in Aquarius and if Rahu is posited in Satabhisha and then he acquires more power, is a fact. But in the same rasi the other two Nakshtra he may fall in are owned by Mars and Jupiter and both are malefics for Taurus Lagna. Though a powerful Rahu will help the native to gain some good revenue through his profession the ups and downs caused by many changes in career are obvious. Such natives may be good in making money but may not have a good career prospects. They will earn through different means on times but won’t achieve a unique position in their profession. Having material gains doesn’t mean a good career.

But some times the strongest planet in a horoscope will have an influence over the person’s character though the planet may not have influence over the Lagna or the 5th house. Moreover there is a difference in a person’s behavior while he is at home, office or in a party. Though the Lagna and 5th houses and planets influencing there will hold the basic instincts, it will get moderated on different occasions like at home the planets at the 2nd house may come to play in his behavior while at office it will be the planet at the 10th house and at a party the 7th and 11th houses will also show an impact. Likewise Rahu in the 10th will impose upon one a suspicious and aggressive nature towards his colleagues and impulsive in taking decisions. You may have a few points to debate about this and I will be glad to have further discussions on the same.

Dear Tom,
My personal view is that when Rahu/Ketu conjoins with a planet then that planet loses some of its power(not entirely) and some amount of malefic nature is been imposed upon the said planet. In such cases mainly the natural karakatwa of that planet gets destroyed. In return Rahu/Ketu gains some of the malefic or benefic natures of the said planet by the means of conjunction. But I don’t believe that a planet in exaltation will act as if in debilitation just because he is conjoined with either Rahu or Ketu.
