Predictions using Vimshottari Dasha
Prediction about any event in an astrology chart is done by looking at either transits of planets (gochara) or by referring to a dasha period. Dasha period system is the more important of prediction systems in use. There are various dasha periods used within Indian Astrology - Vimshottari, Sodashottari, Dwadashattari, Ashtottari etc. Within these dasha systems also, Vimshottari dasha system is marked as the most important one in the ancient texts. The birth chart application in this site displays the Vimshottari dasha.
Vimshottari means 120. The dasha is called as such because of the period of effect of various planets adds up to 120. Dasha periods are always calculated according to the position of Moon in the chart. Janma Nakshatra therefore plays an important part in calculating the starting dasha period in the chart, which is determined by the lord of the nakshatra that the Moon falls in at the time of birth.
The main dasha period is called the mahadasha. This period is further divided into sub periods - antardasha and further sub periods - pratyantar dasha, sukshama dasha and finally the prana dasha. Without going into details of how these periods are calculated, if the span of the main period is of order of years, the duration of prana dasha is of the order of days or even hours. Errors in recording the time of birth are magnified quite a lot while calculating these innermost dasha periods. It is a pretty good reason for astrologers not to use sukshama dasha and prana dasha while making predictions.
Results from various planets are arrived at by looking at their natural or acquired traits in the chart. In their own or friendly house or navamsha, planets give good results. Similar results should be expected from planets that are have shadbala, vargottama or in a square or a trine position from lagna or Janma rashi. Planets involved in various yogas give results as described in the yoga. Debilitated planets, planets in enemy signs, naturally cruel planets give bad results during their dasha periods. Generally speaking, all planets do not give good results towards the end of their dasha periods.
Effects of various planetary combinations (yogas), whether good or bad, rajyogas or dhana yogas or nirdhana yoga etc. and corresponding predictions should be looked at from dasha periods of the associated planets. Essentially, the laws of :
- characteristics of planets in the chart,
- friendship between planets,
- yogas,
- strength of planets and
- retrogression
are the classical ones, some of which we have discussed earlier in this site and read in the books. Please refer to them while trying to make predictions for a particular period in a person’s life.
For ascertaining results related to affairs of a particular house or bhava, the lord of the house, planets situated in the house and those influencing the house by a drishti are considered important. This is required to predict an event in a person’s life - e.g. job, change of place, marriage and birth of children. Let us take an example of child birth. Fifth house (and also the 9th house, by principles of bhavat-bhavam) either from Lagna or Moon is important for children and childbirth. In the period of 5th house lord, putrakaraka, and a benefic planet affecting 5th house, one can expect childbirth in a family. In the period of malefic planets, e.g. Saturn or Rahu or a lord of a malefic house affecting fifth house, it will be difficult for a couple to have children, even if all other putrakaraka elements in the chart are really strong.
When antardasha and other sub-periods are looked at, combination and relationships between various period lords also come into picture. If the mahadasha lord and sub-period lord are friends either naturally or temporally in a chart, we should see good results. A 5/9 relationship, i.e. when two planets are situated in 5th and 9th position from each other, is considered auspicious. Similarly, a 2/12 or 6/8 relationship between the planets is not considered good when the dasha period operates.
All the planets that may influence a house will give their effect as main dasha period rulers or one of antardasha rulers. Per Dr. Raman, antardasha rulers are more important in giving result. When both rulers affect a house, the results should be considered complete. When main dasha ruler does not affect the house in any way but inner dasha ruler does, the results are less and limited. When only the outer dasha ruler is concerned with the house and antardasha ruler is not, the results will be extremely limited.
how much gap in to be there in the dasha of boy and girl having rahu dasa.Is it 6 months or 1 year.

In terms of marital matching, south indian (tamil and kerala atleast) astrologers recommend a full year gap to avoid dasha sandhi. It does not have to be Rahu dasha specifically. Depending upon the houses owned by the planets ruling those dashas, you may keep the gap to about 6 months if the affliction are not much.
I have a doubt regarding the dasha system which is stated below and I request knowledgeable readers to clarify the same.
While calculating Vimshottari Dasha, Moon’s position at birth is considered but when giving Dasha results, the house lordship of a planet as reckoned from ascendant is considered. For example, for Meena Lagna, Mithuna Rashi birth chart, if Budha Dasha is currently running, we say that it is the Dasha of the lord of 4th and 7th house(house lordship reckoned from Ascendant). Since Dasha was initially calculated based on Moon position, wouldn’t it more logical to consider house lordship also as reckoned from Moon, that is, in the above example, shouldn’t we say that the Dasha of 1st and 4th house lord is running?
The convention is to count lordship from Ascendant. It so happens that Vimshottari starts from Moon, as do other nakshatra based Dasas. However when you apply other dasa systems the reckoning point may be a house(rashi) for eg. in Kalachakra.
Of course, analysis should also be pursued from the Moon in Parasari system and you will state your last sentence as “…dasha of the 1st and 4th house lord, FROM MOON, is running.”
Blend the outcomes from both lagna and rashi, giving more emphasis to whichever is stronger, and state the results. This is what Dr. BV Raman advocates.

In your next article (whenever you are able to find time in your busy schedule), would you please write about Bhavat Bhavam and how to use it in predicting events? Maybe you could look at 10th house and 7th house of charts to predict outcomes for the 10th house. I am not clear at all with Bhavat Bhavam and would be happy if you could shed more light on it.

i believe the jupiter dasha will be better than the rahu dasha. rahu in the 6th house and it’s dispositor in the 8th house debiliated is definitely not good. but jupiter being the 4th and 7th lord in the 2nd house with the 2nd and 9th lord venus is definitely good. sun the 12th lord debiliated in the 2nd house and saturn the 5th and 6th lord debiliated in the 8th house aspecting jupiter will cause some problems especially in the sub-periods of sun and saturn but otherwise the jupiter dasha will be good. jupiter in transit is in the 4th house from your lagna aspecting the 10th house of profession. so when the jupiter dasha starts you will get the benefits of the transit as well. so you can definitely expect some betterment in your career once the jupiter dasha starts.

Jupiter being the 7th lord of marriage the Jupiter dasha can very well give marriage and it can happen in the Jupiter-Jupiter period. The birth chart indicates a lot of problems as far as marriage is concerned so I would suggest you to get your birth chart matched with the person you get married to.
I am not sure how your husband is going to be like, i find it very difficult to predict those things unless it is very apparent in the birth chart.

I have to disagree with you in matters pertaining to the 7th house, in your analysis of the chart of the native born on 14.NOV.1970 at 2.27 am in Chandigarh. The rising degree is Virgo 0 deg 59 and thus chart has to be analyzed from Simha AND Kanya lagna. The bhava lagna should fall in Leo.
Consider Leo lagna: 7th lord is in the 9th in debilitation, aspected by the Sun (lagna lord,in debilitation, in 3rd house, enemy house). Venus, karaka for marriage is in own house in the 3rd and 3rd house also has the 8th lord Jupiter. Saturn is aspected by Mars’s 4th house aspect. Thus, overall strength of the 7th lord is poor. The nodal axis while in Leo-Aquarius lies on the 2-8 bhava axis. Reckoned from Moon, 5th and 7th lords are in exchange. Lord of moon-sign Venus is in the 6th, even though it is own house, with 8th lord Jupiter and malefic Sun (both enemies). Considering Sagittarius rising in 9D, Sun is in the 7th, Mars in debility in the 8th. From Aquarius Moon, Sun 7th lord in the 5th and 5th lord in the 8th. Based on the connections bw the 5th and 7th, and the poor strength of the 7th lord in rasi and navamsa, matrimonial alliance, especially the love kind, will not fructify.
If you take Kanya lagna, Mars is 3rd and 8th lord, a powerful maraka for the lagna, in lagna with lagna lord in the 3rd. Jupiter is the 7th lord gets Kendradhipathya dosha, and is in association with 12th lord and malefic Sun, and 2nd lord Venus who is Kalatrakaraka. Jupiter is 6 degrees from the Sun, and Venus is 9 degrees from the Sun; both are combust and powerless. In the 9D chart, with Capricorn rising, Mars is in the 7th in debility, aspecting the 7th lord Moon, with Sun (8th lord) in the 6th. Jupiter (7th lord in rashi) is with the nodal axis and aspected by Saturn.
Gochara: Jupiter is in Sagittarius (8th from Moon) till Dec.2008 and move to the 9th but into debility. Currently, native is running ardhashtama shani till end of 2009. Rahu-Ketu will move into Capricorn-Cancer in April. Transits are not favourable. Moreover, the dasa is Jupiter-Jupiter; swabhukti of any dasa lord is always moderate, even if it is a benefic. IMHO, marital prospects are dim in that dasa-bhukti. Jupiter-Saturn may bring some chance but it will be quite difficult. Given the afflictions to the 7th and 8th houses, remedial measures will have to be performed.

The astrologers I have consulted in UK along with Besab state there is good chance of marriage when Juipter Mahadasha starts next month and that this maybe someone i know already. They have also said that from March there is chance to work at old company again, what is your opinion?
Also I have bee given remedies to enhance the jupiter dasha which is to recite the juipter mantra and for the marriage to happen to wear white clothes on fridays and take milk curd 1st thing in morning on Friday. Are these effective remedies for me? I have been doing these remedies since last year!

I did notice the ascendant degree but as you know I don’t use the bhava chart(I am not against the use of bhava chart though) so made the analysis taking the lagna as Virgo. I absolutely agree with what you are saying, that’s why I had written in my previous post that there are many problems in the birth chart as far as marriage is concerned. I didn’t write the afflictions in the birth chart as far as the marriage is concerned so let me write down for you the observations that I had made.
From Virgo lagna:
2 natural malefics Rahu & Saturn are on both the sides of the 7th house resulting in a Papa-Kartari Yoga and Mars another natural malefic is directly aspecting the 7th house from the lagna. Mars in the lagna has formed a Kuja Dosha. Saturn a natural malefic in the 8th house(mangalyasthan) and getting aspected by another malefic mars by it’s 8th aspect is very damaging. Ketu in the 12th house is not a good placement as far as marriage is concerned.
7th lord Jupiter in the 2nd house with 12th lord Sun is not good. Jupiter the 7th lord and Venus the significator of marraige are both combust as you too have mentioned.
7th lord Jupiter in the Rashi chart is again severely afflicted in the Navamsha. Mars is in the 7th house in the Navamsha and aspects the 7th lord so all these are also damaging.
See, I absolutely agree that Jupiter will not give very good results in it’s own bhukti but don’t you think that even with the limited strength to give results in it’s own bhukti it holds a greater chance of giving marriage as because it lords the 7th house?
Another point I forgot to mention, Jupiter the 7th lord and Venus the karaka for marriage are both aspected by Saturn the significator of delay which indicates late marriage.
In the Navamsha also Jupiter the 7th lord of the Rashi chart is aspected by Saturn.

I said that the Jupiter antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha will not be as likely for marriage as the next one, Saturn antardasha. This is because I have taken Leo as Lagna, while Basab has taken Virgo as lagna. This is because your ascendant degree is very close to the previous sign. Basab and I are not exactly in complete agreement as to who to allocate 7th house lordship hence our differing “predictions”. Based on the remedial measures, it seems that the learned astrologers you have consulted are taking Virgo as lagna which is what Basab also has done. Continue to do those, especially chanting the mantra. Please follow the directions of the astrologer with regard to these. Trust in his suggestions, have full faith and do it sincerely. Changes will surely be seen. I have not looked at your career aspect, and I definitely don’t how to say if you will join the same company or not. I am just learning, so I have a very long way to go.

I agree with you in the points you have made re: Virgo lagna. Jupiter as lord of the 7th in rashi, and in the 5th in navamsa has some strength to give marital prospects in Jupiter antardasha. Given the remedial measures the lady is performing, it is even more likely.

There is something more I would like to add to what you have already said about Jupiter period favouring marriage.
1.Jupiter is in it’s own nakshatra which gives Jupiter considerable strength to give marriage in it’s period.
2. Jupiter is conjunct Venus the significator of marriage which also indicates Jupiter has high chances of giving marriage in it’s period.

In past I have been given remedies that have done more harm than good, but I will carry on faithfully with the current remedies.

VEN is in the 12th house in navamsa, it’s marana karaka sthana for VEN. 12th lord, MOON aspects 7th house. 5th lord JUP is exalted and aspects 7th house from 12th house. AL/UL is in 2/12 relationship. 2nd from UL is aspected by sat, rahu, mars. This analysis shows problems in marriage hence get chart matched before marriage. 7th lord is RAHU and co-lord is sat, marriage to dark person or foreigner or out cast. Most likely marriage in foreign land or travel to foreign land after marriage, since 7th lord in navamsa is in 12th. 7th house is also afflicted but aspect of exalted JUP should keep things on track. A4 is 12th house also confirms residence in foreign land. Since RAHU in transit is going through 7th house and also sat in transit is going through lagna aspecting 7th house. Alok: You’ve taken the date of birth as 9th April, 1979 while Vishnu has taken it as 4th September, 1979. Most people use the dd-mm-yyyy format. Those who mention month first would clarify that. You are currently in the US, I think
I see you use AL (Arudha Lagna) and UL (upapada lagna). Seems like (a) you use the J-Hora software (b) you follow Pt. Sanjay Rath’s/SJVC methods. I am curious to know more about how you are using Arudha (which is similar to Bhavat Bhavam I think). Maybe you could post your analysis of the revised chart - I am quite keen to read it. If you are blending Parasari AND Jaimini methods, then that’s a completely different kettle of fish.
N. Gorur Swamy: The native is over 60 years old, so Chandra Lagna becomes more important (vide Dr. BV Raman’s autobiography. I can’t recollect the chapter off-hand). The nature of the person, physical appearance etc are critical in ascertaining lagna bhava - only people with A LOT OF EXPERIENCE can do rectification.

From your chart, I feel you are just running a not-so-favourable sub-period. From Nov.2008 you will run Mars-Saturn which will be a positive period from a career standpoint. You can make a judgement accordingly.
As far as stammering goes, there is no serious affliction to the 2nd house to impair speech. However, I feel you stammer when highly nervous or under-confident. Do you stammer when speaking Oriya, your mother tongue? or only when speaking in another language you are not so confident in?

I am not an astrologer, but looking into my Kundali I see that Mercury is in lagna and aspected by retrogarade saturn from 7th house. I was thinking of wearring Emerald to strengthen mercury and to improve on stammering problem. Is what I am thinking correct. Please dont laugh at my logic.

Like I said, I don’t see any serious afflictions to the 2nd house. As far wearing emerald goes, you are currently running Mars-Jupiter, both of which consider Mercury (ruler of Emerald) their enemy. So, I don’t think wearing that stone is advisable under the current directional influences of dasha-antardasha.
In your chart, Mercury is aspected by Saturn which is a powerful planet in your chart. (a) he is yogakarak as he is lord of 9th and 10th (b) he is retrograde (c) he gets digbala in the 7th house. So Saturn antardasha will be more favourable than Jupiter, who is a malefic for Taurus lagna.
I am not an expert and I have no ability to prescribe remedies. My PERSONAL view has always been that mantras/puja/homa etc. have more power to attenuate malefic influences, than do gemstones. Prayers to the Almighty will never fail us.

also there is advocacy of chara dasas, narayana dasas, yogini dasas,too - texts predominatly talk of vimshottari only rather than straightaway prescribe the most effective of the classical dasa systems as elaborated by sage parasara, which are mentioned only for academic value or for further research; a learner may not have all the patience to experiment with all the systems and arrive at a conclusion on the secrets of the other dasa systems and how to effectively utilise them and under what set of circumstances/or at what stage of interpretation/timing of events, or to be utilised for better postmortem rather than prediction.
may be need to be incorporated in the learning system/books with effective guidelines on day to day application of these rich secret/sacred dasa techniques not making them appear mysterious or needing expert/researcher’s knowledge beyond a common reader’s quick understanding and practical utility! or are these other dasa systems normally not required to be applied.

Your wife is running Rahu-Mars. It is the last bhukti of the dasa, and Mars is lord of the 6th house and the 6th from the 6th i.e. the 11th. Mars is in the nakshatra of Jupiter, who is a malefic for Gemini lagna. Hence the health issues.
