Mercury represents mind, speech, communication, reading habits and education. It is a happy, joyful planet that governs sense of humour in a janma kundali.

General properties  and behaviour
In a vedic birth chart, Mercury represents astrology and other mantrik aspects. It also represents short trips, especially for religious purposes. Mercury has a free flowing personality that is mutable and receptive, open to suggestions and rarely dogmatic. Budha represents flawless communication and flair but not intelligence. Good judgement, which is basis of wisdom, comes from Guru. Mercury is a boy and represents childhood in the horoscope. It is therefore not as matured and intelligent as Jupiter.

Properties of strong Mercury
When Mercury is strong, it represents clear logic and reasoning ability. The person would have abilities of critical thinking and very clear communication style to reach out the all around him. It would seem to others that the thoughts are free flowing and there would be a ease in reaching out the others around. Mercury’s Budhaditya yoga with Sun is responsible for talent getting the right visibility and recognition among the peers.

Properties of a malefic Mercury
Mercury is the most impressionable planet and can turn malefic immediately when located with or in combination with other functional or temporal malefics in a horoscope. This results in dishonesty and untrusting personality – crooks, cheats and con artists.

Properties of a weak Mercury
A weak or afflicted Mercury in a kundli results in gross immaturity, speech problems, poor communication skills, nervous system ailments, dishonesty. As far as health is concerned, afflictions to mercury usually show up as skin disorders and/or poor communication.

Governing Relationship
In a birth chart, Mercury represents mother’s brother.

Body Part
In a janma kundali, Mercury denotes neck and skin.

Exaltation, Debilitation and Moolatrikona
Mercury is exalted in its own sign of Virgo, which is a sign of information.  The highest exaltation point of Mercury is 15° of Virgo. The debilitation sign is Meena/Pisces, a sign ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is too pedantic and preachy for Mercury.

Mercury in Pisces with neechabhanga will add the Jovian properties to Mercury’s intelligence. The end result is an intellectual.  Mercury’s moolatrikona is Virgo itself, the sign span being 16° to 20°.

Planetary Friendship
Mercury is friends with Sun and Venus. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutrals, even though Mercury is debilitated in Jupiter’s sign. Moon is Mercury’s natural enemy.

Matter & Direction
In Vedic astrology, Mercury governs bronze. In stock market, it it responsible for spread of communication quickly and rumours are cause primarily because of Mercury’s influence. It is responsible for telecommunication, publishing & entertainment and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). Malls, office spaces are governed by Mercury. The land/real estate is Rahu/Mars. Cement, concrete and building materials is Saturn. However, when the finished product is ready to support the knowledge, entertainment and retail industry, Mercury takes over.

Mercury rules over north west direction.

Occupation
In a kundali, Mercury affects all professions where speaking and communication is important. These are professions of teacher, media persons etc. Additionally, mercury forms the sharp logic part of the intellect – hence the professions of mathematician, astrologer are applicable. In Vedic astrology, Mercury is a minister and is responsible for general administration. It is an advisor – not the authority.

Karaka & commonality with various houses
These are the attributes that Mercury governs in a jamna kundali:

  1. 2nd house (speech and overall communication, childhood, education during formative years)
  2. 5th house (Mathematics, logic, learning abilities)
  3. 6th house (mother’s brother)

Astrological Remedies if Mercury is weak or malefic:

  2. Wear green coloured clothes, keep a green coloured pen with you at all times. Avoid red colour in clothing.
  3. Donate mung – green gram dal, green clothes, green fruits
