We live in a cynical world where success and failure are judged through career, profession, wealth and other worldly possessions. The person may be the most unhappy in the job he is doing, but if he is making good money, it is believed that he is doing well. Creativity, competence and integrity are not looked at when judging success in professional area. Ups and downs in career generally relate to promotions, salary hikes, pink slips and firings etc.
Though this kind of introduction for a book on astrology might sound negative, the profile of the book hardly is. It is a good piece of literature. Although, I respectfully disagree with some of the some of the theories as they do not match with what I have read in other books on astrology.
As explained in this book, various professions are related to elements of fire, air, earth and water and an individual is likely to follow a profession based on domance of an element in the horoscope. As explained in the classical texts as well, signs are divided in one of the four elements. There are professions relating to one of the signs, e.g. fire element signifies professions relating to engineering, surgery, career as a barber, politician etc. Similarly division of signs into moveable, fixed and dual signs also has an effect on profession based on attitude and temperament of a person based on the sign placement in the chart.
Apart from discussion on qualities of signs, the author describes how 10th house, dashamsha and various combinations of raja yoga, dhana yoga and nirdhana yoga should be looked and can be used to come to a conclusion about the profession of an individual and if he/she is doing well in it. Important chapters in the book where author presents this information are (3) determining profession, (4) Judging a nativity for ups and downs in career, (5) practical illustrations in ups and downs in a career, (6) foreign travel in connection with profession and (7) nakshatras and profession.
