This is a book on Vedic Astrology that is written with one goal in mind – to be relevant in today’s world, and yet be completely faithful to the literary works on astrology. It is a must have book.

The organization is pretty simple. The author assumes basic knowledge and familiarity with structure of a janma kundali, ascendant, houses, planets, rashis etc and then jumps directly to the relevant issues that affect us the most. Astrology is often said to be a guide and this book teaches an astrologer to be that guide and not just a person who makes such a prediction. These principles separate a fortune teller from an astrologer. Sample the chapters: how to astrologically determine the basic motivation of an individual, channels of human development through an astrologer’s eye, introversion and extroversion etc.

Earlier, I talked about issues relevant in today’s world and how this books help us understand these problems. We, in this materialistic world are concerned with (and each of these is a chapter in this astrology book) planetary combination for popularity, parenthood and family planning, profession, vocation and income, marrige, foreign travel etc. As you go through some of the comments on this Jyotish site, you can see that these are exactly the patterns that the comments/questions fall under. These issues are beautifully explained throughout the book with example charts and janma kundalis.

This books makes the reader think and teaches a budding astrologer how to learn astrology. I would recommend reading this book after going through the some basics on Vedic Astrology and finish it properly before jumping on to other astrological texts that can be a little harder to read and understand. My recommendation for a beginner would be to go through astrology books in following order:

  1. Astrology of the seers
  2. Uttara Kalamrita
  3. How to judge a horoscope
  4. This book – Esoteric Principles of Vedic Astrology
