Reference Books for Vedic Astrology

Even after several years of being associated with Astrology, I still consider myself a mere student. Here is the list of books I refer to in my pursuit of knowledge. All these authors are my Gurus and I have benefited from their teaching immensely. I would suggest you to get hold of these books if you too wish to learn.

Name of the book	Mahadeva’s Jaataka Tatva

Description: Jatak tatva is a set of short shlokas divided into five parts: dealing with basic principles of astrology, place and condition at the time of birth, each of the twelve houses of horoscope, female astrology and vimshottari dasha considerations. Although the shlokas are short, they are not that easy to commit to memory due to a lack of pattern in them. Unlike the presentation of matter in “Three Hundred Important Combinations” or “Uttara Kalamrita”, no attempt is made to elucidate the shloka or to simplify its meaning. For this reason alone, this book is not a very easy read, unless you have patience to do research on the shlokas and discover the hidden meaning if the meaning is not readily obvious.

Description: This astrological work is dedicated to Vimshottari Dasha. The chapters of this book are dedicated to effects to effects to dasha and antardasha of various planets and explains what the effect the planet gives in various states - when the planet is exalted, debilitated, in moola trikona sign etc, associated with other planets that are malefic of benefic in nature. For various divisions of dashas, the author explains how mahadasha lord and inner dasha lord work together some time adding to the result and sometimes negating each other’s effect to give fairly ordinary result even when they are both yogakarakas in the horoscope. Apart from the parts of the book where the mechanism of the lords working together is explained, the book should be read along with BPHS and more importance should be given to the matter explained in BPHS.

Description: Planets, signs and houses need to be looked at to ascertain disease causing factors, as they belong to an element - air, water, fire and earth. This book describes these elements affecting one body part of other. E.g. a strong Sun ensures that the bones in the body are strong, weak Mercury and Sun cause skin diseases. To ascertain the strength of the planet, the usual tools of shadbala should be used.

Name of the book	Hora Sara

Description: The author of this book is Prithuyasas, son of Varahamihira, who wrote Brihat Jatakam. The work is comparable to Brihat Jatakam not just because of the father/son relationship of the authors, but in the way the matter is presented as well. Hora Sara also deals with the effects of planets, signs, bhava, rajyoga, chandra nabhas yoga but the treatment is a little different in the two books. There are no obvious inconsistencies in the two works, or it may be due to the fact that I am not competent enough to research such inconsistencies.
